Description

Few surviving Arts and Crafts buildings have achieved the levels of acclaim which have been lavished on William Lethaby's church at Brockhampton, built 1901-2. Yet, despite its appearance in numerous books and articles, a distinct sense of mystery has persisted as to precisely how its acknowledged properties had been so uniquely achieved. Graham Burgess, philosopher and 21st century Arts and Crafts practitioner was intrigued to discover Lethaby's secrets. In this book the reader is led on a fascinating and often surprising journey of discovery.

About the Author

Graham Burgess is a graduate in both Philosophy and Architecture and has run his own architectural practice since 2001. Having studied the writings of Ruskin, Morris, Voysey, Baillie-Scott, Lethaby and others, he has long been convinced of the continuing relevance of Arts and Crafts philosophy. He has attempted to follow in the footsteps of some of these earlier pioneers, similarly experimenting with collaborative working practices and more responsive design processes. In so doing, he has successfully managed to replicate their joys, their sense of beauty and vitality - as well as sometimes their difficulties and anxieties. Most of his built work can be found in and around Frome in Somerset. Graham is also the author of a number of books including The Nature of Green Building (2014).
