About the Author
Born in Richmond, Va... grew up in Weldon, NC...attended Weldon public schools and Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Va. He was a private in the U.S. Marines and later received a BS degree in Political Science at The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. He started drawing political cartoons for The Daily Tar Heel in 1955. He then came to Knoxville as editorial cartoonist for The Knoxville Journal in June 1958. He moved to the Knoxville News Sentinel Jan. 1992 and then after many years retired in Feb. 2019.
Daniel’s activities included service as a board member of the Baptist Health System of Knoxville, and The Volunteer Ministry Center. He was the co-chairman of The Dogwood Arts Festival In 1998 and was a graduate of Leadership Knoxville. He also served as president of The Fork Union Military Academy Alumni Assoc.
He was inducted in the Tennessee Journalism Hall of Fame in 2018 and will receive The Tennessee Governor’s Distinguished Artist Award in October 2019. He has donated the majority of his life’s work of original cartoons to the University of Tennessee Library. He is married to Patsy Stephenson Daniel and they have a son, Charles III, and a daughter, Sarah, four grandchildren, and a great grandson.
