Fifteen-year-old Raissa Santos has submitted to the Code her whole life, living under the watchful gaze of cameras within the city of Gideon. When the handsome and mysterious Arkin Pettigrew appears at school, Raissa's world is turned upside down. Suddenly, her older sister, Petra, is arrested for possession of enemy propaganda, and Arkin reveals his true identity. As Petra faces execution, only the enemies, believers in an illegal book, offer Raissa hope for her sister's rescue. Will she remain a loyal citizen? Or, to save Petra's life, will Raissa become an enemy of Gideon?

Melissa McGovern Taylor has been writing fiction for over a decade. She has a BA in writing from Methodist University, and her fiction and nonfiction pieces have been featured in local, national, and international publications. Her first novel, The Road to Mercy, was published in 2010. In 2011, she received a regional artist grant for the completion of her second novel, Enemy of Gideon. Her short story, "Gabe", won first place in the Salvation Army Writers Contest in 2013. She lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with her husband and two children.
