Most of what has been written about Jewish sacred music is primarily descriptive, largely unconcerned with the impact of the changing nature of synagogue song on Jewish religion and identity. Indeed, for all that has been written about the Americanization of Judaism--from ritual changes to the emphasis on social ethics--critical analysis of developments in synagogue music has been largely ignored. This volume presents a much-needed social-theoretical approach to Jewish sacred music in the post-modern synagogue, and concludes that music, far more than an aid to ritual, is a prime indicator of the state of American Judaism today, and will play a crucial role in its future transformation.

About the Author
BRAD STETSON is Director of The David Institute, a social research group in southern California. He holds a Ph.D. in Social Ethics from the University of Southern California and has written widely on political and religious topics. Brad Stetson lectures in the Religious Studies Department at California State University Long Beach, where he has taught since 1995. He has written widely on religious and social topics, including "Pluralism and Particularity in Religious Belief "(Praeger, 1994) and "Human Dignity and Contemporary Liberalism" (Praeger, 1998). JONATHAN L. FRIEDMANN is Cantor at Temple Bet Knesset Bamidbar, Las Vegas, and Cultural Program Assistant at SELA Sephardic Cultural Center in Los Angeles. He currently lectures in the Department of Religious Studies at Whittier College, and is a recipient of the Shalshelet Award for New Jewish Liturgical Music (2006).

This fine book is most welcomed. William Sharlin is a living legend in the American Jewish community. Trained at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, he studied with the great teachers and philosophers of the 20th century.
