In the trillions of cells that make up the human body, cancer may develop practically anywhere. Human cells often divide (via a process known as cell growth and multiplication) to create new cells when the body requires them. New cells replace old ones when they die as a result of aging or injury.
Occasionally, this systematic process fails, causing damaged or abnormal cells to proliferate when they shouldn't. Tumors, which are tissue masses, can develop from these cells. Tumors may or may not be cancerous (benign).
Invading surrounding tissues or spreading to distant parts of the body, cancerous tumors might result in the formation of new tumors (a process called metastasis).
A cancer of the lymphatic system is referred to as lymphoma. A network of nodes (knots of tissue) and vessels make up the lymphatic system. The lymph nodes work together to remove fluid and waste from the body. By eliminating alien cells and organisms, the lymph nodes function as small filters.
