iguana, any of eight genera and approximately 30 species of the larger members of the family Iguanidae belonging to the lizard genus Iguanidae. The term "iguana" is typically reserved for only those reptiles that belong to the Iguaninae subfamily. The green iguana, also known as the common iguana (Iguana iguana), is the most well-known species of iguana. It can be found from Mexico all the way down to Brazil. Males of this species can grow to be over 2 meters (6.6 feet) long and weigh up to 6 kg at their utmost potential (13.2 pounds).
